We now have scientific evidence: tourniquet used during peripheral puncture is considered a source of contamination of venous access. The study released in April of this year, was conducted by Marcus Grohmann, et. all. and titled: Reduced bacterial contamination rates detected on silicone tourniquets compared to conventional in clinical routine.
With this result, what was previously a recommendation of good practices suggested by the Infusion Nursing Society, at the Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice, published in Journal of Nursing in 2016, it now becomes a scientifically validated instruction for the tourniquet [tourniquet] to become yet another opportunity to fight healthcare-related infection.
